I've been in this cave many times, and would be happy to lead a trip next month, if anyone is interested. I've gotten permission to visit it from a guy who lives down the road, but turns out he doesn't actually own the property, lol. However, there are no posted signs on the logging road leading to the trail, and it seems to be visited some based on the road usage.
The cave is about 15 miles north of Gallatin, so that's about an hour from Nashville. If anyone would be interested in going on a trip, or, you have personal knowledge of the cave an would like to go and/or give some advice, please let me know. This is the largest cave in Sumner County, I'm guessing it may approach 1 mile total passages. It wouldn't hurt to do a little clean up while we're in. There's some trash; beer cans and batteries mostly.
The cave is not too difficult, except for a squeeze about midway into the cave and some duck walking/ crawling for a couple 100 feet.

I do not know if this is the same cave. But years ago I went into one a few hundred feet (by myself). It was near Bransford on 31E (close to Bethpage) but North of Gallatin. It was then just a hole in the side of a cliff. I have not been there since or seen it since. I'm not even sure if this is the same cave or not.

Nonetheless, I would like to go once we figure a date/time so I can schedule.

The trip is officially a go. I have permission, and the landowner is actually excited to here that the grotto is coming for a trip. I intend to do some clean up while I'm in there, so you can use this as an excuse to sooth your green-tooth. I don't know anything about efficiently cleaning a cave, I'm just assuming we use garbage bags, but I'm sure there are "special tactics". Anyone with any knowledge, please let me know.
If anyone has a suggestion for a better meeting spot, let me know, but I'm thinking about the rivergate exit on I 65 just north of Vietnam Veteran PKWY/ 386. 8 AM or so, we could grab some breakfast at McDonalds.
We are going to check out a lead that someone in the Grotto has told me about, or at least we'll try and find it. Never the less, this will be a caving trip, and not just a clean up trip. I need my fix, too..

Pick a definite meeting spot so I can put it in the newsletter.

Meet at the McDonalds at the I-65 Rivergate Parkway Exit at 8 AM Saturday.

First, I can't go this time due to prior committment - love to go, so maybe next time.

For everyone else, though, could you please clarify the meeting place? Don't want anyone to get left for showing up at the wrong place. The exit just north of V Vets is Long Hollow, and the Rivergate exit is just SOUTH of V Vets. Both have a McDonalds. In my opinion the Long Hollow one is better, since it's closer to the Interstate and has tons of extra parking at the Kmart next door.

As for cleaning up, just pick up some loose trash. Things like graffitti removal or formation cleaning get quite controversial - you'd want to open up a lengthy discussion about the pros and cons, and various methods, before attempting such things.

Thanks, and you all have fun. Supposed to be about a mile of dry mostly walking cave.

.

Actually, both of those exits are NORTH of 386 Vietnam Vet Pkwy. The exit immediately south of V Vets is Old Hickory Blvd.

To Everyone going:

The meeting place WILL be:
MCDonalds at I-65 EXIT 96 RIVERGATE PARKWAY/GOODLETTSVILLE at 8 AM.
If you are travelling from Nashville on 65, get off at EXIT 96, and turn RIGHT. McDonalds is about 1/2 mile down on the Left. There is plenty of parking at the adjacent Rivergate Mall if needed.

Oops - you're right, I was wrong about the north/south thing - sorry about that. Still, good to have the clarification since there are 2 exits, both with Mickey Ds, just one mile apart. I once missed a trip due to a miscommunication about the meeting place, and as a result I'm probably overly cautious about these things.

Again, you all have fun.

Dang, saw this too late to complain about McDonald's. Guess I'll breakfast at home and meet you all at the last minute.

Alternate breakfast choices within sight of this Mickey D's:
Wendy's (do they have breakfast?), Krystal, and Mrs. Wieners (uhh... Winners). Plus Waffle House as soon as you exit the Interstate. Chik-fil-A is about a stone's throw away in the mall parking lot, and there's an IHOP real close north on Gallatin Road. Then exit 97 has Sonic, Jack-of-the-Box, Hardee's, Cracker Barrel, and Shoney's - you could grab something up there and double back. I'm sure there's more, that's just off the top of my head.

The only place on that list I'd pay to eat is Cracker Barrel ... I know, I'm way picky. But finding my own breakfast isn't a hardship.

I only eat breakfast when I plan to go caving and the meeting spot is at a restaurant. Otherwise I prime my system in the morning with french roast. There's also a starbucks and a Panera Bread near the 96 exit if that's your thing. Or, maybe you just brown bag... Next time I lead a trip, we might meet somewhere else, but I don't want to change it now so as to avoid confusion.

Oh, yeh, I also heard that the Dollar General Headquarters (just a few blocks away) offers free breakfast to anyone showing up with a blue Walmart apron and the nametag "Robert V." at the security desk. Laughing out loud

How long will it take to get to the cave and how long would you think we'll be in there? I have a social function to attend that afternoon so I need to be home by 2 I think.

Less than 1 and one-half hour drive to the cave. It's pretty easy to find your way out if you have to scat earlier than the rest of us. My Cell phone is 429.8617. I should have posted that earlier...
