Recent caving

Most of my recent photos have been disappointing, discouraging me from posting anything – I really enjoy putting up the photos better than telling my stories. I finally selected just a few that are acceptable; here are short descriptions to accompany them:

Trip Report: Hardin's Cave on the evening of April 14th

We had a good time at Hardin's Cave even though attendance was low. Several people that had told us they would or might be there must have got scared off by the slight rain and colder than average temperatures over the weekend.
No rain as we geared up to enter the cave around 6 pm. Zigh had some problems with his knee pads that he eventually shredded about halfway into the cave. The water was as high as I have ever seen in this cave. The stream normally flows through most of the main passage of the cave, but it is usually possible to avoid stepping into water. This time there were several places that you had to step into water that went over the ankles, mostly in the front and back of the cave. The rear of the cave was also muddier than normal.

Caney Hollow Cave

This past Saturday, March 17th, we went down to Franklin County to survey Caney Hollow Cave while the gray bat colony is still away for the winter. Heather Garland organized the trip, and Ken Oeser led the survey. The rest of the team consisted of Joe Douglas, Kristen Bobo, Becky Dettorre, Lauren, and me.

It was almost a fine Spring day: a bit cold, with a steady breeze making it feel more so, but plenty of sunshine, and wildflowers coming up all over.

Blythe Ferry Cave

This past weekend (Feb. 24 & 25) I went with the Oeser family (Ken, Annette, Alexandra, and Braxton) to Blythe Ferry near Dayton Tenn. Gerald and Avis Moni and my daughter Lauren were also along. We wanted to visit and survey several small caves in the area as well as see the sandhill cranes at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge.
